When Do You Need New Tires?

Like many components on your vehicles, the tires need to be inspected and replaced when they become worn or damaged, but how can you tell if they are ready to be replaced yet? New tires should have about a third of an inch of tread (10/32 or 11/32 of an inch) and the U.S. Department of Transportation recommends that tires are replaced when the tread reaches 2/32 of an inch. A quick way of checking tire tread depth is to use “The Penny Test”. Just grab a penny, and insert it into your tire tread with Abe’s head facing down, If you can see all of Lincoln’s face, then it is time for new tires because your treads are 2/32 inches deep or less. Make sure to repeat the process on the inner and outer treads of all four tires.

Other reasons you may need to replace one or more of your tires include:

  • Your tread wear indicator bars are exposed
  • Cracked and weathered sidewalls
  • Bulges and blisters on the tires
  • If your tires have excessive vibration
